The base data comes from OpenStreetMap, the open community map of the world: every park, coffee shop, trailhead, and fishing dock tagged on the ground by locals, then categorized here. The Iconic NorCal tab pulls from anything with a Wikipedia or heritage tag, so only objectively notable places qualify.
